![]() (I admire Hegel’s dialectic but I don’t believe it. ![]() – To say this is, of course, incredibly glib, but I’m assuming that reading Hegel’s ‘Logic’ is not part of your assignment. Hegel attacked this problem but, again, there are many who are unconvinced by his story of dialectical ‘triads’ starting with Being-Nothing-Becoming. Was it just an exercise for Plato’s students? The general problem is that, when dealing with ultimate questions, it is not at all surprising that we should encounter contradictions and paradoxes, not to mention language simply giving out. Current views are divided as to how seriously this part was meant to be taken. ![]() In the second part of the Parmenides, Socrates employs his dialectical method to reduce the Parmenidean theory of the eternal and unchanging One to various kinds of self-contradiction. You may have come across the ‘Third Man Argument’ which Parmenides uses to undermine the theory of Forms dialectically, by means of an argument from vicious regress. ![]() In the first part of the Parmenides, by far the most studied, Parmenides argues against Plato’s theory of Forms, here attributed to the young Socrates, although we cannot be sure how close Socrates and Plato were on this question. Plato’s late dialogue Parmenides records a fictionalized meeting between the young Socrates and Parmenides where the two great philosophers take turns to criticize one another’s views. ![]() Why did Plato disagree with Parmenides’ philosophy?įor me, this is a question of more than historic interest. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Nassim Taleb has had an incredible career with great success in trading in the stock market and currencies. In his book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, he puts forth many ideas about black swan events. He gives the rise of the Internet, the personal computer, World War I, and the September 11 attacks as examples of Black Swan Events. The black swan theory is a set of ideas made popular by a man named Nassim Nicholas Taleb. The theory was introduced in Taleb's 2007 book, The Black Swan. Such events, considered extreme outliers, collectively play vastly larger roles than regular occurrences. Unlike the earlier philosophical "black swan problem", the "black swan theory" refers only to unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence and their dominant role in history. The psychological biases that make people individually and collectively blind to uncertainty and unaware of the massive role of the rare event in historical affairs. The non-computability of the probability of the consequential rare events using scientific methods (owing to the very nature of small probabilities). The disproportionate role of high-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations in history, science, finance and technology. The theory was developed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb to explain: After the fact, the event is rationalized by hindsight. According to the black swan theory, a black swan is an event that is a surprise (to the observer) and has a major impact. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a new version of a commonly held-thesis it is only a couple of years since the Oxford atheist Philip Pullman published his novel The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, which is based similarly on the idea that the church turned Jesus the Jewish teacher/leader into a divine figure. He now sees the Jesus of history as a nationalistic zealot, whom the Christian church turned into an internationally-minded peace-loving divine Christ and Son of God. This book explains how and why his view of Jesus changed. Reza Aslan’s book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth (Westbourne Press, 2013) has really hit the headlines in the US media and online, aided hugely by an unfortunate interview on Fox News, in which the presenter could not seem to accept that a Muslim might legitimately choose to write a historical book about Jesus! Aslan came from a nominal Muslim family in Iran, moved with the family to the States at the time of the Islamic revolution, met up with evangelical Christians in the States and had a Christian conversion in his teens, but then began studying his new faith and other religions, and gave up his new faith reverting to Islam. So he gives up being king of all wild things and decides to sail back to his room, where he finds his supper waiting for him, 'still hot'. Suddenly the boy feels lonely and not quite as wild anymore. A wild rumpus ensues until Max orders them all to stop and sends them off to bed without their supper. ![]() Max manages to tame them 'by staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once' and these creatures -upon closer inspection, charmingly goofy and altogether harmless- immediately make him King of all Wild Things. Here he is met by a group of apparently fearful roar-roaring, teeth-gnashing, eye-rolling, claw-showing monsters. In the loneliness of his bedroom, Max dreams up a leafy world of thick forest that takes him on a boat 'through night and day and in and out of weeks and almost over a year to where the wild things are'. The story opens with Max dressed in a wolf suit, running about his house making mischief until he gets sent to bed without any supper. Where the Wild Things Are is a journey of a little boy called Max from the solitary confinement of his bedroom, where he has been sent 'without eating anything' for what would now be termed some 'time-out', to the land where the the Wild Things are and then back to the cosiness of his bedroom and the warmth of his supper. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The film’s end credits briefly pause to give us a blip of a scene in which our secondary heroine, Astrid ( Gemma Chan), makes lingering eye contact with a random man at a lavish party. How can we tell all that from a single shot? To break it down, we have to spoil the scene in question, so don’t read unless you want to know more! Crazy Rich Asians’ mid-credits scene, explained Specifically, it tells us that a certain secondary character isn’t so secondary after all that this film is even more indebted to Jane Austen than you may have thought and that the producers of Crazy Rich Asians are already betting on at least one sequel - and possibly two. ![]() But while it is indeed very brief - and dialogue-free, for that matter - that scene actually tells us a whole lot about Crazy Rich Asians.
